The main contributors to the Bhakti movement in Tamilnadu were the 63 Saiva Nayanmars and the 12 Vaishnava Alwars. Alwars are those immersed in God. The temples they sang on were grouped as 108 Diyva Desams and the collection of hymns is known as Nalayira Divya Prabandham. Alwars were instrumental in popularising Vaishnavism in the Tamil speaking regions and were influential in promoting Bhagavata cult and the Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata.
